Police say two men stole metal while on the job almost every day for four years.

Two workers made a fortune stealing from Pepco every workday for four years, according to Prince George’s County police.

The suspects worked for a Pepco subcontractor. At the end of their shift, one would drive a work truck and the other would drive his SUV to a secluded warehouse area where they would load copper wire and pipes into the SUV, police said. Then they’d take the copper to Ultra Recycling and sell it for cash.

“Pepco loss prevention managers have stated that their loss is probably in the hundreds of thousands,” said Detective Andrea Sheehan, of Prince George’s County police.

The men were caught on surveillance video, arrested and charged with felony theft. They are out on bond and no longer work for the subcontractor.

As big a bust as this is, Sheehan said some other wire theft cases under investigation could be even bigger.

“We have an idea that there’s people out there who are getting over $5,000 a day stealing copper [from Pepco],” she said.
