Man Sentenced for Filing Fraudulent Tax Returns

A New York City resident has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing identifying information and using it to file fraudulent federal tax returns.

Twenty-nine-year-old Leurys Antonio Olivo of the Bronx was also ordered to pay more than $42,000 in restitution to the U.S. government at sentencing Monday in federal court in Alexandria.

According to court documents, Olivo, a citizen of the Dominican Republic who is in the United States illegally, led an identity theft scheme from the Bronx.

Prosecutors say Olivo obtained stolen social security numbers and other identifying information, then helped others file fraudulent tax returns seeking refunds.
