1 Dead in Va. as Icy Road Conditions Cause Accidents

A man who was involved in a multi-vehicle crash along Interstate 495 in Virginia was found dead about a mile from the scene, according to Virginia State Police.

Police said 23 vehicles, including two tractor-trailers, were involved in the early Saturday morning crash in the northbound lanes. Investigators said four people were transported from the scene with minor injuries.

About a mile north of the crash site, police found the body of a man, who they determined was involved in the crash and walked away from his disabled vehicle. His body was taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner, and police are in the process of notifying next of kin.

Virginia State Police investigated 41 reported traffic crashes across the Northern Virginia region. The majority involves damage only to vehicles and no injuries. Several of the crashes involve two to four vehicles that slid into one another due to the slick road conditions.

Icy roadways made for difficult driving throughout the area early Saturday morning.

"It's not worth coming out here. People are losing their lives out here the roads are bad," said Tosh Matsumoto, a driver for Al's Towing and Storage in Virginia.

Emergency crews got to as many incidents as possible, but the weather proved to be challenging for one fire truck.

A Fairfax County, Virginia, fire engine, Engine 421, slid off an icy Route 50 on the way to an accident on Interstate 66. There were no injuries, but many roads in the area were closed due to conditions or accidents.

"A lot of bad accidents out here, fire trucks running off the road and I'm getting stuck," Matsumoto said.

Emergency officials said drivers should continue to treat all wet roads as potentially icy for the next few hours.
