Capitals Recall Casey Wellman, Nicklas Backstrom Questionable Against Hurricanes

Ahead of their emotionally charged matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday, the Washington Capitals recalled forward Casey Wellman from AHL Hershey.

Wellman has 10 goals in 48 AHL games this season. Since Washington acquired him from the Florida Panthers on Jan. 31, Wellman has 11 points in 11 games with the Bears.

The 25-year-old's arrival made more sense Monday, when Nicklas Backstrom missed practice Monday with an illness and Jason Chimera left practice early with a lower-body injury. Both Backstrom and Chimera, however, took part in this morning's pregame skate.

Chimera will play Tuesday, while Backstrom is questionable, according to head coach Adam Oates. If Backstrom can't go, then Wellman will replace him in the lineup.

Mike Green, who has missed the last three games with a groin injury, will also return to the lineup Tuesday. Braden Holtby, fresh off a two-year contract extension, will start his seventh consecutive game.
