The nephew of Minnesota's basketball coach Tubby Smithwas killed during an off-campus fight over the weekend.
Police say 19-year-old William L. Smith, a Becker College student who lived in Scotland, Md., was killed early Sunday. The University of Minnesota confirmed the victim's relationship with the basketball coach.
Smith was stabbed once in the chest after a fight involving students and nonstudents broke out during a house party and spilled into the street, Detective Captain Edward McGinn said.
The host of the party said that Smith was killed while trying to protect a friend. About 200 people participated in a candle-light vigil in the area of the incident.
According to police, a weapon was recovered at the scene. No arrests have yet been made, by interviews with witnesses have produced some leads.
