Capitals To Skate on the National Mall

Want to skate with the Capitals outside? Here’s your chance.

Several members of the team will be doing some laps and sipping free hot chocolate Sunday at the outdoor Sculpture Garden Ice Rink. Consider it some early Winter Classic practice for the Caps, who will take on the Penguins on New Year’s Day outside at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

The lineup for Sunday’s event is an impressive one, as Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson and Marcus Johansson are scheduled to be in attendance along with assistant coach Dean Evason and Slapshot the mascot. That’s a pretty good representation of the future of the franchise, eh?

The festivities start at 10:30 a.m. with some coloring stations for the kids set up at the Pavilion Café. At 11 a.m., the Caps will take the ice for a skills exhibition that includes some showing off of their stickhandling, passing and skating prowess.

After the ice is resurfaced, the Caps will invite fans for an hour-long skate. The first 200 people in line will get in for free (skate rentals will be $3). If you have your own skates, of course, you’ll bypass that $3 fee.

If you didn’t know, the rink is located on the National Mall at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW.
