Woman Hit by Stray Bullet While Walking in Laurel Neighborhood

A 19-year-old woman is in critical but stable condition after she was hit by a stray bullet while walking in a Laurel, Maryland neighborhood Sunday night.

The victim was walking from a parked car in the 9000 block of Canterbury Riding when she was struck just after 10 p.m., Howard County police say.

"What's really unusual for us in this case is that this was an innocent bystander — someone who was completely innocent and not involved at all and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Sherry Llewellyn of Howard County police.

Witnesses told police they saw a group of young men running from the area after the shots were fired. Police do not know how many people were in the group.

The victim was taken to a hospital.

Police want to look at any video from surveillance cameras in the area.

Police are offering a reward of up to $1,500 for information that can help them identify the suspects. Anyone who can help police is asked to call 410-313-7867.

"We don't have a lot of shooting incidents in Howard County," Llewellyn said. "There's just not a high rate of violent crime."
