Missing UMD Beating Video an Employee Mistake

State Police investigate missing footage

University of Maryland officials are calling a missing piece of surveillance video from the night a student was beaten by police an employee mistake.

School officials asked Maryland State Police to investigate the video on Tuesday.

Cell phone video from the celebration of Maryland's March 3 basketball victory over Duke shows police in riot gear beating a student. Lawyers for that student and another alleging police brutality subpoenaed university surveillance video from that night, but somehow, the footage from camera 158 wasn't surrendered.

A cover-up? University officials say no.

The 90 minutes of missing footage doesn't show the incident. It has since been given to attorneys and media, and while there is a three-minute gap in the video, that gap is before students spilled onto the streets of downtown College Park.

The students' attorneys said the missing footage is cause for concern

"We are going to have to take it at face value," Christopher Griffiths said. "There are some real coincidences here and some real concerns. We are heartened to hear there is going to be an investigation."

Four Prince George's County police officers have been suspended since the incident.
