Deonte Rawlings' Brother Shot, Killed Boarding Bus

WASHINGTON -- A man shot and killed while boarding a Metrobus Wednesday afternoon was the brother of a 14-year-old boy shot and killed by police two years ago.

Wednesday afternoon, 19-year-old George Rawlings attended the funeral for 19-year-old Ashton Hunter, who was killed on Halloween, sources told News4. After the funeral, police said, he was shot trying to board a bus at 14th and H streets, in the heart of the Atlas District neighborhood striving to be the city's next hip area to live and socialize.

Darrell Lee, 21, is in custody in the Hunter slaying. Investigators believe Hunter was trying to buy a gun from Lee, sources said.

Sources said that while Rawlings did not witness Hunter's death, he felt threatened and had been in hiding.

Rawlings was the brother of Deonte Rawlings, who was shot and killed by off-duty D.C. police officers on Sept. 17, 2007. Police determined that the 14-year-old opened fire on the officers first, and the officers were cleared, though the boy's family and community activists still want justice.

Police are investigating Wednesday's slaying.
