Car Falls In Friendship Heights Sinkhole

The car was no match.

It was swallowed up by an 8-by-15-foot sinkhole caused by a water main break near the intersection of Friendship Boulevard and Willard Avenue in Friendship Village, Md.

Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said a 12-inch main ruptured at about 7:30 a.m. Friday. It caused the street to cave in. The car was on the road when it started to rupture -- and down she went.

The vehicle has been removed, but parts of the street will be closed until repairs are made.

No word yet on what caused the break, but WSSC said the aging pipe system is susceptible to cold temperatures.

Despite the scary-looking scene, no one was hurt.
