Archaeologists in Alexandria Find Human Remains in Old Town

Archaeologists working in Old Town Alexandria have found burial remains for two individuals that may date back to the 18th century.

The archaeologists are working with developers at a construction site where Robinson Terminal South used to be.

The city requires developers to contract with archaeologists as redevelopment occurs on the city's waterfront.

In a press release, the city said the remains were discovered Thursday. Human remains are consistent with use of the site in the 18th and 19th centuries, when burials sometimes occurred outside of cemeteries.

The city said state law strictly regulates the handling of human remains to ensure they will be treated respectfully.
