MCs, Mics and Metaphors

Hey, there's more to hip-hop than just a catchy beat

Ever wonder what art inspired by the lyrics of your favorite hip-hop song would look like?

Actually, we're guessing that thought has never crossed your mind. But take a hot sec to think about it right now.

OK, done? Then head out to Flashpoint Gallery (916 G St. N.W.), where you can see hip-hop as the muse at M3: MCs, Mics and Metaphors, which opened Thursday.

The exhibit features 17 emerging artists, each exploring the power of hip-hop lyricism by responding to a song or artist through visual art. Check out hip-hop-inspired fashion, photography, video, animation and paintings.

"Project Runway" fans, grab a sneak peak at a Season Four contestant (you know, the season that's been in limbo all these months but finally will air in August). Check out contestant Carmen Webber's deconstructed jacket with a nod to MC Big Daddy Kane -- before "Project Runway" makes her a design star.

MC 3 showcases both artists from hip-hop's golden era (think Public Enemy) and current popular and underground artists (Mos Def, Jay-Z). The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. On Saturday, August 8, catch live performances and an artist talk from 5 to 8 p.m.
