Documents Detail How DC Police Arrested Wrong Man

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” District of Columbia police have arrested a man in a fatal stabbing in April after an innocent man was charged with the crime and later released.

Court documents obtained by The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/jq5l6u8) detail how police misidentified Francisco Ayala as the man who stabbed Dimas Fuentes-Lazo.

Ayala was identified based on a statement from a witness, surveillance video and information from a confidential informant. But after Ayala was arrested, DNA analysis excluded him as a suspect while linking 23-year-old Christian Romero of Hyattsville to the crime. Ayala was arrested on May 10, and the charges against him were dropped on May 23. Romero was arrested on Tuesday.

The D.C. Public Defender Service says police relied too strongly on the unnamed informant when they arrested the wrong man.
