D.C. Parking Meter Increase Passed by Council

Mayor has to sign off on legislation

The D.C. Council voted 11-2 Tuesday to raise the meter rate for nearly all of downtown from $1 per hour to $2 per hour, and to raise any 50-cent spaces to 75 cents per hour.

A provision to end free weekend parking was pulled from the legislation, according to the Washington Examiner.

The legislation will take effect as soon as Mayor Adrian Fenty signs off on it, meaning the change could take place within days if he goes along with the plan.  It will then last for 225 days, since it was emergency legislation.  Another measure could then be passed to make it permanent.
