Hundreds of people demonstrated outside the residence of George Washington University’s president late Thursday and early Friday, and one person was arrested.

Someone threw a water bottle at officers and was arrested for assault on an officer, police said.

The crowd chanted “Let him go! Let him go!” as the protester was taken into custody.

Thursday’s protest on F Street NW near 20th Street NW focused on university President Ellen Granberg. Protesters say she refused to come to the table with them during the nearly two-week-long encampment at University Yard.

Some set up tents on the street.

Police pushed protesters back from the police line, chanting “Move back! Move back!”

Protester Selina Al-Shihabi said demonstrators are not deterred.

“You cannot silence us. You cannot oppress us. You cannot use your oppressive tactics to make us forget our goals,” she said.

Protesters mobilized at about 11:40 p.m. The group began to walk up 19th Street to H Street. They turned west toward University Yard, which has been blocked by 12-foot-tall fencing.

Once the group reached University Yard at about midnight, a protest organizer on a megaphone began telling people to go home for their safety, and the crowd started to disperse.

Protesters want GW to divest from financial ties with Israel.

Early Wednesday morning, D.C. police went to campus to execute an order requested by the university for the protesters to leave the encampment. Police arrested 33 people, including six GW students, according to the university.

Protesters said they want people who were arrested to have charges dropped, and they want pro-Palestinian speech to be protected on campus.
