Some Prince George’s County students celebrated their good attendance with State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks and other county representatives at a pep rally hosted by Bowie State University Tuesday morning.
The end-of-the-year celebration honored students who participated in the State’s Attorney Office’s “I Belong Here!” Truancy reduction initiative. Students got a campus tour, played games and participated in ROTC activities.
Launched as a pilot program in 2013, the initiative was designed to encourage school attendance for students and their parents. This year’s program was implemented in three middle schools located in neighborhoods within the bounds of the County Executive’s “Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative.”
The campaign includes an attendance competition between seventh grade homerooms who compete against each other for attendance awards, with the ultimate goal of showing students the correlation between class attendance and performance so that they become more invested in their education and themselves.
“Nothing worth achieving is easy. It all takes effort. And you have put in the effort,” Alsobrooks said in her opening greeting. “We are so very, very proud of you.”
The top students for best attendance and most improved attendance from each participating school were recognized.
