DC Area Deluge

Heavy rains soak DC metro area

Heavy rain moved through the Washington Metro area early Tuesday morning.

A cold front backing down the eastern seaboard triggered an intesnse burst of rainfall just in time to wreak havoc on the morning commute.

Rainfall rates of more than an inch per hour caused creeks and streams to rush out of their banks and many roads to disappear under the rising waters.  Many locations recieved more than 2 inches of rain and isolated locations had over 4 inches.

Take a look at these two lists, one for Maryland and one for Virginia, and you can clearly see why so many people had so much trouble getting around this morning.

With more rain in the forecast the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch through 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.
