The Washington Spirit made history Saturday as the team won its first NWSL championship, defeating the Chicago Red Stars 2-1. The Spirit becomes the latest Washington team to win a trophy, joining the Nationals, Mystics, and Capitals, who have won a championship over the past three years. 

As the Spirit celebrated, the team received plenty of congratulations on social media ranging from fellow athletes to politicians. 

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, an investor in the Spirit ownership, was among those to offer his congratulations. Washington Football head coach Ron Rivera was another sports figure in the city applauding their performance. The team also saw President Joe Biden send them a congratulatory tweet for winning the NWSL championship.
