Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has proposed taking a small percentage of the state's sales tax revenue to help fund new road projects.
McDonnell says this plan would raise an additional $90 million. The money would go to relieving congestion on some of Northern Virginia's busiest roads.
Some of the projects include the I-95 and 395 HOT lanes, and widening commuter roads like Route 28 in Fairfax and I-66 in Prince William.
Democrats say this plan would take money from schools and other core services.
The proposal is now in lawmakers' hands. The 2011 session ends February 26.
