VA Docs Defied Opiate Rules in Treating Vets, Audit Finds

Veterans were given dangerous combinations of psychoactive and painkilling drugs by VA medical centers despite agency policies warning against it, a new audit shows, NBC News reported. The VA's Inspector General conducted the review and found that 92.6 percent of veterans who are given long-term opioid prescriptions (such as Oxycodone) are also prescribed benzodiazepines (such as Xanax). The mix has been linked to lethal overdoses.
