Woman Leaving Work at United Medical Center Killed in Hit-and-Run in Southeast D.C.

For the second time this year a woman was killed in a hit-and-run outside the United Medical Center along Southern Avenue SE, where residents say it’s dangerous to cross the street.

Someone struck and killed a woman leaving work at United Medical Center in southeast D.C. Friday evening.

Lanham, Maryland, resident, Emebet Kebede, 56, was hit by a black Chevrolet Tahoe about 6:10 p.m. in the 1300 block of Southern Avenue SE, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Kebede, a longtime physician's assistant, was leaving work.

"My mother was the kindest person you will ever meet in your entire life," said her daughter, Baeza Michael. "She was the most hardworking person I've ever known."

In April, 68-year-old Faith Pine was struck and killed in the same area.

Though a bus stop is right across the street from the entrance to United Medical Center, the closest traffic light and crosswalk is almost two blocks down the street.

Mayor Muriel Bowser said she is studying the problem but has not committed to a traffic light at the entrance.
