USA Today reporter Oren Dorell was killed while riding his motorcycle after a driver under the influence crashed into him on H Street, police say. News4’s Derrick Ward reports.
A USA Today foreign affairs reporter has died after being struck in Northeast Washington, D.C. by a driver suspected of being under the influence.
Oren Dorell, 53, was riding a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle Friday evening eastbound along the busy nighlife area on H Street Northeast, D.C. police said.
The driver of a Toyota Camry hit Dorell. Police responded about 8:30 p.m. and Dorell was rushed to the hospital, where he died, police said.
Police say the driver of the Toyota, 47-year-old Daryl Grant Alexander of Southeast, D.C. was under the influence during the crash.
Alexander is charged with second degree murder, driving under the influence and leaving after colliding.
Dorell leaves behind his wife, Virginia "Ginny" Knapp Dorell, and two sons, 12-year-old Malcolm and 11-year-old Leo, USA Today reported. He travelled to Iraq, Egypt and Ukraine to cover conflict, unrest and war, the paper said.
