One Dead, One Critically Injured in Columbia Heights House Fire

A woman has died and a man is in critical condition after a fire in Columbia Heights. Mark Segraves reports.

One person died, and another suffered life-threatening injuries in a two-alarm house fire in northwest D.C. Monday morning.

Fire crews were called to the 1000 block of Kenyon Street NW in Columbia Heights just before 6:30 a.m. Witnesses called 911 to report that they could see heavy smoke from several blocks away. Some neighbors threw rocks at the windows of the home, hoping to wake anyone who may have been asleep.

"The flames were coming completely out of the window, and the flames were jutting up 15, 20 feet in the air," said Mike Majcen, who lives nearby.

Firefighters found two people in the home. Both had life-threatening injuries. They were taken to an area hospital, where 81-year-old Tillie Jones died.

It took firefighters almost an hour to put out the flames.

At least nine people were displaced from their homes, including adjacent homes.

There's no word on what started the fire.
