Transportation Alternatives to Metro

News4’s Jim Handly explains how you can pre-plan your commute after Monday’s incident at the L’Enfant Metro Station.

There are alternative travel options for riders after the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station was closed Monday after smoke filled the tunnel there, causing the death of a woman and injuries to scores of others.

All Yellow Line service will be replaced with additional Blue Line trains operating between Huntington and Largo Town Center via Rosslyn. Trains on this route will operate every 12 minutes. Use Green Line trains between Greenbelt and downtown D.C.

Blue Line trains between Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center will operate ever 12 minutes.

Orange Line trains will run every 8 minutes between Vienna and New Carrolton.

Silver Line trains will run every 12 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Largo Town Center, with many trains expanded with extra cars.

Green Line trains will run on a normal weekday schedule.

The Red Line remains unaffected.

Shuttle bus service also has been established. On the Green Line, riders can board shuttle buses here:

  • Navy Yard - NJ Ave & M St SE
  • Waterfront - M St & 4th SW
  • L'Enfant Plaza - C St & 7th St SW
  • Archives - Pennsylvania Ave & 7th Street NW • Gallery Place - H St & 7th St NW • Mt Vernon Sq - M St & 7th St NW

Yellow Line customers should use Blue Line service for travel between downtown D.C. and Virginia.

Two D.C. Circulator routes are available from M Street/Navy Yard to Eastern Market (OR/SV/BL Metrorail) or Union Station (Metrorail Red Line). SmarTrip is accepted.

VRE's Fredericksburg Line will carry commuters from Union Station or L'Enfant Plaza to Crystal City, King Street-Alexandria and Franconia-Springfield.

The L'Enfant Plaza station reopened to Orange, Silver and Blue line trains about 8 p.m. For almost five hours they bypassed the station through the lower level. Metro recommended riders use the Federal Center SW as alternative. It's a short walk from L'Enfant.
