Man Faces His Death on the Train Tracks

Amtrak operator tried to warn pedestrian

LORTON, Va. — An Amtrak train hit and killed a local man on Tuesday, according to police.

Michael Sheppard was standing next to the train tracks near the intersection of Lorton and Gunston Cove roads when the train operator discovered him. Sheppard stepped onto the tracks with his back to the train after the train operator blew his horn to warn the 48-year-old. The operator then activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the train. The man turned toward the train and was struck.

It appears the deceased was wearing ear muffs that covered his ears.
