Thermal Images Used in Catching Armed Robbery Suspects

Thermal imaging and a police helicopter helped authorities capture three men suspected of robbing a convenience store at gunpoint in Capitol Heights, Maryland, last week.

Around 1:20 a.m. Thursday, three men held up 7-Eleven in the 7400 block of Central Avenue. Police say one of them pulled out a gun and demanded cash. The three then jumped into a car and fled into the District, stopping near the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium and running away.

A police department helicopter spotted the suspects hiding in some woods next to the Anacostia River.

Video released from the Prince George’s County Police Department shows thermal images of Prince George’s and D.C. officers searching through the woods with dogs as the flight crew guided the officers to the suspects.

Dominique Calvin Better, 27; Malik Larry Carter, 18; and Rodney James Stevenson, 21, were arrested in connection with the case.

They remain in custody of the Metropolitan Police Department pending extradition to Prince George’s County. Each suspect is facing numerous charges linked to the robbery.
