Two 14-year-old fans from Maryland played the Taylor Swift song “Blank Space” on ukuleles and sang as they waited for the gates of Nationals Park to open for the star’s concert Monday. “She’s like such a good role model to look up to, like for girls like me,” one of the young musicians said. Thousands of Taylor Swift fans flocked to Navy Yard Monday night for the first of two nights of concerts by the star.
"Swifties," as fans of the 25-year-old singer are known, headed to Nationals Park from as far as Toronto and Paraguay.
"We flew 15 hours and 500 miles just to be with Taylor today," a fan from Paraguay said.
"We love Taylor. She's the best singer ever," her companion added.
Another pair of fans drove 10 hours from Toronto to see Swift. One of the fans will see the singer nine times this summer during the 1989 World Tour.
"Came from Canada to shake it off with Taylor," the sign toted by the young women said.

"She's like such a good role model to look up to, like for girls like me. She never does anything wrong," one fan said. "We're going to do whatever we can to get as close to her as possible."
The sold-out concert Monday was set to begin at 7 p.m., with opening acts Haim, Vance Joy and Shawn Mendes.
The Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro station will stay open until 1 a.m. early Tuesday, with the last Green Line train leaving at 12:39 a.m. Connections for the Blue, Orange, Silver and Yellow lines should be made at L'Enfant Plaza. Connections for the Red Line should be made at the Gallery Place-Chinatown.
Tickets for the Tuesday night concert were still available as of 6:30 p.m. Monday and started at $134.50 each.
