Taxi Fare Hike to Hit D.C.

Hike is expected to begin April 21

Cab riders will soon need to carry some extra cash when catching a taxi in the District. The DC Taxicab Commission unanimously approved a fare hike Wednesday night.

The fare hike, effective beginning April 21, will increase cab fares from $1.50 to $2.16 per mile. Drivers also will charge an extra $15 during snow emergencies and $25 for each hour you keep a cab idling.

The new rates can't be implemented until cabs recalibrate their meters, so passengers could get a break if drivers take longer to get that done.

The rate hike is designed to help drivers who have lost money changing from the zone system to meters.
