Montgomery County Bus Driver Assaulted, Stabbed

A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a bus driver in the leg during an altercation in Takoma Park, Md.

Police responded to the 7600 block of New Hampshire Avenue for a disturbance just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Officials say 30-year-old Andrea W. Smith of Silver Spring, Md. was sitting in the back of a Montgomery County Ride-On Bus when he became agitated, yelling that he was going to "kill people of various ethnicities."

Police said Smith then demanded the driver pull over -- when he refused to do so, Smith approached the driver, physically assaulted him and attempted to grab the steering wheel. Smith then pulled out a pocket knife, waved it around then stabbed the driver in the leg, police said.

The bus driver managed to get off the bus and Smith fled the scene -- he was placed into custody shortly thereafter.

Smith is facing charges of first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, open weapon with intent to injure and disorderly conduct.
