Severe Thunderstorms, Flooding Hammer DC Area

The area is still recovering from a weather whiplash that hit with heavy rain, high winds, and very large hail.

Severe thunderstorms, including one that prompted a tornado warning in Maryland, tore through the D.C. area Monday night, causing flooding in some parts of the region.

Flood waters are moving down Rock Creek along Jones Mill Road and Beach Drive in southern Montgomery County to Rock Creek Park in northwest Washington. The flood crest is expected to reach Rock Creek Parkway between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

In Prince George's County, torrential rains were falling in Brandywine, putting a damper on the evening commute.

At 9:15 p.m., trained weather spotters reported heavy rain in North Beach and Chesapeake Beach due to thunderstorms, with up to two inches of rain fallen.

Hail as large as 1-3 inches has been reported with these storms, including tennis ball-size hail in the Rockville and Woodbridge, Virgini
