Missing Dog Found Dead in Virginia

The search for a dog that escaped from the care of a pet boarding business came to a sad conclusion Wednesday evening.

After a tip about a dog apparently struck by a car near Rolling and Old Keene Mill roads in the Springfield, Va., area, it was confirmed to be Pat Nichols's 11-year-old terrier Sissy, a friend of Nichols told NBC Washington.

Sissy escaped Dec. 21 while in the care of Just Fur Pets. She was being walked behind the day care when she slipped out of her collar and ran.

Sissy was seen later that day, but an Animal Control officer couldn't catch her.

After a dog matching Sissy's description was seen at Cardinal Forest over the weekend, Nichols hired renowned pet detective Carl Washington, who arrived from Georgia Wednesday.

Sandy Stevens and her border collie, Heidi, from Annandale, Va., also had joined the search.

"I'm very sympathetic to pets and their owners, and I know how much they love one another, and it's just a terrible experience to lose one or have one injured or hurt," she said.
