Search Called Off for Man Swept Away Near Great Falls

The search has been called off for a man who was swept away while wading in the Potomac River.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews called off their search for him around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The man, who is in his 20s, was wading in the water at the Great Falls overlook near the Old Angler's Inn when he slipped and ended up over his head, a fire department spokesperson told News4.

His friends were unable to grab him and saw him float downstream.

A police helicopter along with Montgomery and Fairfax fire boats were at the scene looking for him.

Entering the water in that area is illegal, the spokesperson said.

Three people have drowned in the Potomac this summer, including a world-class kayaker.
