Red Laser Targets News Helicopter

Suspect was bothered by chopper noise

WHEATON, Md. -- Montgomery County police arrested a 57-year-old Silver Spring man for pointing a red laser beam at WJLA-TV's helicopter Wednesday morning.

WJLA complained that someone in the area of Whittington Terrace and Caddington Avenue pointed the laser at their chopper while it was flying for its morning news show.

The noise from the helicopter as it flew over his home before 7 a.m. bothered Gary Wort, so he went to the back of his house and shined the laser pointer at the pilot, obstructing his view, police said.

When officers arrived at the scene and went to the reat of the house, Wort shined the laser pointer in an officer's eyes, police said.

Caught red-lasered, Wort was taken into custody and charged with one count disorderly conduct, three counts of reckless endangerment and two counts of prohibited use of a laser pointer.
