Proposed Prince George's Budget Includes Property Tax Hike to Improve Schools

Improving schools in Prince George’s County may have to come at the expense of homeowners. A budget plan released Friday includes raising the property tax. County Bureau Chief Tracee Wilkins has a closer look at the plan that also includes layoffs and furloughs.

The new budget plan in Prince George's County involves a big hike in property taxes and layoffs and furloughs for county workers in order to improve public safety and local schools.

County Executive Rushern Baker unveiled his $3.6 billion budget Friday.

Almost $2 billion will go for education to improve schools and better pay to keep teachers from leaving.

To pay for the increase in school funding, property taxes will go up.

The budget also calls for 110 layoffs of county employees and five furlough days without pay for most of the county's more than 6,000 employees.

The budget must be approved by the county council by June 1.
