Power Struggle

Damaged cable leaves part of National Mall in the dark

Power went out on the National Mall, leaving several monuments in the dark.

We might have averted a government shutdown this past week, but parts of the National Mall were left in the dark last night.

It had nothing to do with any budget battle, however.

The National Park Service said an electrical cable was damaged Tuesday night, knocking out the power to parts of the National Mall.   That included the Lincoln Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Several traffic lights along Independence Avenue and 23rd Street in Southwest were also out of service.

Pepco restored power early this morning.
