In Superior Court Tuesday, Lamont Terry was charged in the first homicide at the Jefferson Memorial — the 1992 shooting death of Chet Matthews.
D.C. Police say they cracked a 20-year-old cold case.
On Memorial Day in 1992, Chet Hunter Matthews left his parents' house in Takoma Park to meet a woman at the Jefferson Memorial.
Some time around 11 p.m. that evening, police arrived on the scene at the memorial and found the 27-year-old Matthews mortally wounded. He later died of his injuries.
Police said that following a robbery, Matthews, a father of 3, was forced to kneel on the ground. He was shot in the chest with a shotgun, according to court papers.
On January 20, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested 37-year-old Lamont Deshawn Terry, of Columbia, South Carolina. He's charged with felony murder while armed in Matthews' death.
Law enforcement transported Mathews back to the District on Monday.
