Pedestrian Killed in Early-Morning Crash in Ashburn

An Ashburn family is struggling to understand what caused a loved one to step in front of a car Tuesday morning. The woman was struck and killed on Waxpool Road near Ashburn Village Boulevard. Northern Virginia Bureau Chief Julie Carey reports the tragedy is a strong safety reminder for pedestrians and drivers.

A pedestrian was killed early Tuesday in a crash in Ashburn, Virginia.

The victim, a 61-year-old Ashburn resident, was struck by a vehicle shortly after 5 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Waxpool Road near Ashburn Village Boulevard, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim, identified as Perveen Bilal Bin Butt, was not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

The driver remained on the scene of the crash. Neither alcohol, drugs, cellphone use nor speed appear to be factors in the crash at this time, authorities said.

The victim took morning walks daily near the town house complex where she lived to help keep her blood pressure in check, but she walked further than usual Tuesday morning, her family said. They are not sure why she would have been trying to cross the street where she was struck.

Her son said her death will be particularly hard on his children — ages 4, 8 and 11 — who lived with her.

Waxpool Road was closed in both directions between Ashburn Village Boulevard and Regency Drive for several hours after the crash but has since reopened.

The sheriff's office is investigating the crash.
