Opening Statements Expected in Charlottesville Hate Case

Opening statements in the Charlottesville trial of James Fields are expected as early as Thursday. A woman who was injured in the car crash that killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer will testify. “When I was hit, I had no idea what was going on, she said.

Jury selection is continuing at a slow pace in the trial of an Ohio man accused of killing a woman during a white nationalist rally in Virginia last year.

Opening statements are expected as early as Wednesday.

James Alex Fields Jr. is charged with first-degree murder and nine other charges for allegedly driving his car into a crowd of counterprotesters in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017. A 32-year-old woman, Heather Heyer, was killed, and dozens of others were injured.

Heather Heyer, the young woman killed in Charlottesville Saturday, was remembered at a memorial service as an inspiration for justice.

A woman who was injured in the crash is expected to testify.

"When I was hit, I had no ideas what was going on," she said Wednesday.

Jury selection began Monday in a process Judge Richard Moore described as "slow going."
