Man Hurt, 3 Cats Killed in Northeast DC Apartment Fire

An apartment fire in Northeast D.C. Monday morning left a civilian with serious injuries and a police officer with minor injuries. A dog was rescued, but three cats were found dead. 

The fire broke out in the 500 block of 59th Street NE, near the Maryland border. Flames could be seen leaping from the two-story building. Firefighters responded at about 8:15 a.m. 

A man was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, the D.C. fire department said. A D.C. officer had a minor injury and also was taken to a hospital. 

A woman and a second officer were treated at the scene and released. 

One dog was rescued and resuscitated, and three cats were killed. 

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
