Three people were rushed to a hospital via helicopter and others were less seriously hurt after an SUV driver hit an ice cream truck in La Plata. A motorcyclist died following a chain-reaction crash with an ice cream truck in La Plata, Maryland, that left three others hospitalized.
The driver of a Honda SUV had recently left a football game nearby and was driving along Radio Station Road Saturday about 4 p.m., the Charles County Sheriff's Office said.
That driver crossed the center line and struck an oncoming ice cream truck, the sheriff's office said.
The ice cream truck driver was thrown from the vehicle. Photos from the scene show the truck tipped onto its side, with ice cream wrappers strewn around broken windows.
Several vehicles behind the ice cream truck crashed, including a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
The Honda careened into a tree and caught fire. Deputies say bystanders, including an off-duty Maryland State trooper, pulled the driver out of the burning car.
Three people were airlifted to the hospital.

The motorcyclist, Timothy Anthony Brown, 54, of Landover, Maryland, died from his injuries, the sheriff's office said.
A fourth person was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities say. Three other people involved did not need medical attention.
The sheriff's office is investigating the crash. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and a review by the Charles County State's Attorney's office.
