Motorcyclist Killed in Crash in Northeast DC Following Chase by Officers: Police

The motorcyclist crashed into a pole at Benning Road and Oklahoma Avenue NE

NBC Universal, Inc. D.C. police say there was confusion after they called off the chase but U.S. Park Police continued to pursue. Pat Collins reports.

A motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Northeast D.C. early Monday after being chased by officers, authorities said.

The motorcyclist crashed into a pole at Benning Road and Oklahoma Avenue NE before 3 a.m.

D.C. police said a chase by officers preceded the crash.

The chase began in the 1900 block of 9th Street NW about 1:45 a.m. when an officer saw a man on an orange three-wheeled motorcycle, recognized him as a possible murder suspect and tried to pull him over.

About 2:45 a.m. police realized the man on the three-wheeler was not a murder suspect but just wanted for questioning. D.C. police called off its chase, but U.S. Park Police continued the pursuit until the fatal crash.

A section of Benning Road was shut down for hours and later reopened.
