Montgomery County Police Cruiser Strikes Pedestrian in Wheaton

Montgomery County police say an officer driving a police cruiser struck a pedestrian on Georgia Avenue. News4’s Shomari Stone reports.

A Montgomery County police cruiser struck and critically injured a man in Wheaton Thursday night, police say.

An officer was driving southbound on Georgia Avene approaching Blueridge Avenue when the cruiser struck the pedestrian, police say.

Police said the officer was not responding to an emergency call at the time and the cruiser's emergency lights were not on.

There is no crosswalk in the area of the crash.

Medics took the man to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Video from Chopper4 showed what appeared to be a sandal in the middle of the road. Several police cruisers surrounded the scene of the crash.

Police shut down the northbound and southbound lanes of Georgia Avenue in the area as they investigated.
