Makiyah Wilson's young life was cut short last summer by gun violence in D.C. Now, she's being remembered through a foundation guided by her mother and sister.
The mentoring program, called Makiyah Scouts, met for the first time Wednesday night, and it’s meant to help empower young women and girls ages 8-13.
Her mother, Donnetta Wilson, told News4 that Makiyah Scouts is a way to honor her daughter, who loved to give back to others. The leaders hope to create a sisterhood that will empower the young women to be active in their communities.
Makiyah was 10 years old when she was struck by a bullet and killed near her home in D.C. when she was on her way back from getting ice cream.
Seven people have been arrested and charged in her death.
