Out-of-Town Police Vehicles Parking Illegally

The District is well known for how it hands out parking tickets, but News4’s Tom Sherwood saw many police vehicles in town for annual Police Week festivities parked illegally without any tickets Monday.

D.C. is well known for how it hands out parking tickets, but this week thousands of officers in town for the annual Police Week festivities are not getting tickets despite parking illegally.

News4 saw police vehicles blocking a crosswalk and bus stops and parked at expired meters. Newark New Jersey police put out their own orange cones to block off a bus zone for themselves and for their own illegally parked “traffic" van.

“I don't know what they think this is, like a party zone or a law enforcement free zone?” D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh asked.

She called on Police Chief Cathy Lanier to crack down.

The city said laws were being enforced, and Chief Lanier's office said, "They are expected to follow the laws just like anyone else."

But over several hours, News4 saw no tickets on any illegally parked police vehicles.
