Fatal Fire at Leisure World Apartments in Silver Spring, Md.

One person killed in fire

One woman has died in a fire on the 9th floor of the Leisure World community. News4’s Darcy Spencer talked to neighbors about getting out of the building.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials are investigating the cause of a fatal fire at a Silver Spring retirement community.

Fire crews were called to Leisure World in the 15700 block of Interlachen Drive about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from an apartment on the ninth floor of one of the community's high-rise buildings where the body of one person was found inside a sunroom.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and some residents of the building were asked to "shelter in place."

The victim has been identified as Debra Yuhas Lee, 63. 

There are no reports of injuries to other residents or any of the more than 75 firefighters at the scene.
