Rescue workers have recovered the body of a woman whose car was swept off a bridge in Woodstock, Virginia.
Virginia State Police say 78-year-old Nelba Jo Rice of Woodstock was trying to cross a low water bridge over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River Thursday morning when her car was swept away by the current. According to The Northern Virginia Daily, Rice's family called 911 after receiving a call from her.
Rice's vehicle was found submerged in the water about a half mile from Artz Road, The Northern Virginia Daily reports. First responders say the car was removed from the river about 3:30 p.m., but Rice was not in the car.
Her body was found about one and a half miles away near Headley Road.
Gary Yew, chief of the Department of Fire and Rescue, says he doesn't know how Rice got out of the car.
Rice's death comes hours after strong storms moved through the state, killing four people. The Northern Virginia Daily says the river was flowing at just under one and a half miles per hour.
