Cesare, a 3-year-old Italian sheepdog rescued from a burning home in Northwest Washington Monday afternoon, has died.

The owner of the dog said on his Facebook page that Cesare died Tuesday morning. He said a second dog, Pepper, was doing great and out of the Friendship Heights Animal Hospital.

Firefighters found the dogs in a two-story house in the 4500 block of Klingle Street, Northwest, and began life-saving efforts on Cesare at the scene to get the dog breathing, D.C. Fire and EMS said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, D.C. Fire and EMS said. No one else was inside the house at the time of the fire.
