Children Suffer Minor Injuries in School Bus Collision

Five elementary school students were taken to the hospital after sustaining minor injuries when their school bus collided with two cars, police said.

Howard County police are investigating a three-vehicle collision involving a school bus carrying students to Centennial Lane Elementary School in Ellicott City, Md., Wednesday morning.

A preliminary investigation reveals that around 8:30 a.m. the bus was traveling south on Centennial Lane when it collided with a van, which then collided with a car.

A total of five of the 55 children, ages 6 through 10, on board the bus were taken to Howard County General Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Samuel Stokes Jr., 63, of Baltimore, Md., was identified as the driver of the school bus and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Stokes has been cited with failure to control speed to avoid a collision and negligent driving.

Police believe Stokes may have turned his head to address the students at the time of the collision.

The driver and two adult passengers in the van were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The driver of the car was uninjured.
