Blind Man Assaulted on Red Line Train After Bumping Passenger, Police Say

A blind man with a service dog was assaulted on a Red Line train after he bumped into another passenger, police say.

Metro Transit Police are looking for two young men suspected of assaulting the man and trying to grab the phone of a witness who called police. 

The train was crowded with morning commuters on Monday, and riders were pushing their way onto the train, one witness told Popville. A man boarded with his service dog and accidentally bumped into another passenger, police say.

When confronted, that man told the passenger he was blind, the witness told Popville.

Police say as the train started moving, the passenger began threatening and pushing the blind man.

When another witness tried to step in and diffuse the situation, police say the alleged attacker and another suspect began shouting obscenities at her.

Police say the suspects tried to grab her cellphone when she called the police, but failed to get the phone.

She also recorded another altercation between the two suspects and a passenger, according to police.

The witness who wrote to Popville said the incident was reported to a station manager at the NoMa-Gallaudet station, but the train continued onto the next stop.

Police say the altercation ended when the train pulled into Union Station and the suspects ran off.

The blind man was not injured in the assault, and police didn't share information on any other injuries.

The first suspect is described as a black male with a Band-Aid under his right eye. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a black hoodie. The second suspect is a black male about 18 to 20 years old. He was wearing a black knit cap and blue stone-washed jeans, according to police.

The attack occurred on a Shady Grove-bound train that left Rhode Island Avenue about 7:50 a.m. It is under investigation as an assault.
