If you're cruising the Beltway in Maryland in the coming weeks, make sure you're watching your speed.
New cameras have been installed on I-495 near Suitland Road to monitor speed. The cameras will automatically flag drivers traveling 12 or more miles over the 55 mph speed limit.
For the next three weeks, the cameras will issue warnings to drivers caught speeding in the area. But come Aug. 7, speeding drivers can get $40 speeding tickets.
The cameras were installed in an effort to improve safety in construction zones along the Beltway where accidents are likely to occur. Maryland highway officials said work zone accidents often result in injuries to drivers and passengers rather than workers. The cameras aim to increase safety for everyone on the road, they said.
